Description

Usually students spend the first 2 years exploring and discovering a wide variety of subjects in college. The last two years are more serious as most of the specialization takes place. There are, of course, exceptions: some students know from the very first day what they will major in.
Some, indeed, wish to add a more explicitly professional component to their studies. Our majors and minors, and various pre-professional programs allow students to prepare themselves for any role they decide to choose.
In addition to the majors, the Carolina College of Arts and Science hosts over 60 minors. To request declaration of a major or minor, you should visit the host department.

Students majoring in chemistry or physics may pursue either the B.A. or the B.S. As part of the dual degree B.S./B.S. program in engineering, the Bachelor of Science degree is offered in those two departments as well as in biology, computer science, and mathematics.

To obtain a minor, the student needs to complete six subjects from the chosen area. The requirements for the complexity of the subjects and their sequence depend on the chosen specialty. Minors are a real gift for those who are interested in everything at once and for those who strive to develop in different areas and directions.

Majors

Freshmen, sophomore and juniors in the College of Arts & Sciences are advised through special department, CMD, whose mission is to guide students and facilitate the learning process as they define their personal and academic goals.
The College of Arts & Sciences offers 60+ majors in various fields of study ranging from the arts and humanities to the natural sciences and social sciences.

Minors

Minor is an optional additional mini-specialization of the future diploma. Minors and majors differ from each other in that the first concept is subordinate to the second.
As with major, our college draws up a curriculum listing the required classes that a student must complete in order to obtain a second major (minor).
If you are considering changing or declaring a minor in the College of Arts & Sciences, we recommend that you follow some helpful guidelines from the CMD department before making any changes.

Pre-professional Programs

Our Preprofessional Advising Department helps students who are considering law, the health professions, business, and other professional paths, to plan their education keeping these goals in mind and to decide how, when, and where to apply to professional school.
We help students explore various professions, provide information about the probability of admission to selected schools, and assist with the application process.
